A mirroring moment

When you recognize that to connect, you have to be real

Ankita Rao

Ankita felt her trust was betrayed by teenagers in the community where she was volunteering. She struggled with acting as a mentor versus acting as an equal in order to explain to them why she was upset by their actions.

Something to think about

  1. Think of someone in the community with a different viewpoint than your own. What can you both do to understand each other better?
  2. Can you think of a time when you passed judgments and reacted emotionally to a situation? How might you have handled the situation differently?
  3. How do you define your role in your community (organizer, teacher, manager, etc.)? How does your role affect the perspectives and expectations you have towards others?
